The Importance of CLEAN Makeup

Jul 28, 2020

What Does It Mean to be CLEAN?

CLEAN makeup refers to a brand that is free of toxic ingredients.  Unfortunately, there are toxic ingredients hiding in some of our favorite makeup brands, which leave residues on our lids and lashes and lead to inflammation.

These toxic ingredients are like anything else that you can think of being toxic, like eating food that is spoiled. If we eat toxic foods, our stomach would become inflamed and it would be toxic to our insides leading to inflammation, discomfort, and bloating.

What happens with toxic ingredients on the eyes?

When toxic ingredients come into contact with your eyes, they become red, swollen, watery, and irritated.  There are 26 ingredients, which are commonly found in makeup that need to be avoided on the eye.  You can download a list of these ingredients here.

How do I know if makeup is CLEAN?

Say you loved a certain mascara or eyeliner. You just can't live without it. You've used it for years and years and years and you would like to know if it is CLEAN.

There are 3 simple ways to know if your makeup is CLEAN and won't irritate your sensitive eyes:

1) Use the list of toxic ingredients to review the ingredient list in the products you are currently using.

2) Use the Skin Deep DataBase from the Environmental Working Group. In this website, you can type in your favorite mascara or makeup product, and it will give you a rating on how safe it is to use the product.

3) I have a curated list of eye-friendly makeup.  I have carefully vetted these brands to ensure the comfort and safety of your eyes.  You can get this list through my CLEAN Makeup Manual Course.  Check it out here.

Why is it important to be CLEAN?

Well, the facts are that the beauty industry in the U.S. is largely unregulated. The FDA does not approve makeup and does not require clinical trials on makeup before it comes to the market.

The U.S. FDA has banned only 11 ingredients from makeup products. However, in the European Union, over 1100 ingredients are banned from those products.

Women are typically using at least nine products on our faces every day, and that can add up to hundreds of ingredients on our skin.  This means that the likelihood of using beauty products with toxic ingredients is quite high, and even worse, these ingredients are in close contact with the front surface of the eyes and lids which are upon the most sensitive areas on our body.

What Happens if You Don't Use CLEAN Makeup?

Well, like any other part of our body, if we neglect it, then it will degenerate. Toxins will build up and cause irritation and inflammation over time if we don't take care of our eyes and eyelids, ultimately leading to dreadful dry eyes. Thus, the redness and irritation that you occasionally feel at this point can progress to a more chronic concern if the use of products containing toxic ingredients continues.

CONCLUSION

If you are suffering from dry, red, and irritated eyes, it's time to look to see if toxins in your makeup are one source of inflammation.  Begin using CLEAN makeup by switching to a safe brand.  You can get a curated list of eye doctor-approved makeup in my CLEAN Makeup Manual Course.  Or, switch to using only CLEAN brands of makeup like Beautycounter or Eyes Are The Story

I personally love the products from Eyes Are The Story. This is a new brand of beauty products, which was developed by doctors with your eyes' health in mind. And of course, if you'd like to check out their line of products, you can go to their website.  Use the code: WINKWINK for a 20% discount on your first order.
