#124: Upneeq, The Lift You've Been Looking for

Sep 07, 2021

Have your eyes been feeling a little down lately?  Many of my patients are very concerned with the not only the health of their eyes, but their appearance as well.  As the windows to your soul, you want them to present you in a good light.  I understand, you want your eyes to be open and bright.  You want them to enhance your appearance and not take away from it.

There's a new eye drop that can make your eyes look more beautiful and alive.  Upneeq is the only FDA approved drop that is used to treat low lying lids by lifting the lid to open the eyes.  Unlike most of the information on my blog, this drop doesn't necessarily have anything to do with dry eyes.  But, I thought you would be interested in a drop that made your eyes look beautiful, right?

What does it do?

Upneeq lifts the lids and makes your eyes look wider and whiter. What a great drop!  It comes in single serving preservative-free vial.  It does not need to be refrigerated.  So, it is easy to carry with you on the go.

Why Do You have Low Lying Lids?

There's a couple of reasons why you might have low lying lids.  Most of them are absolutely normal. However, there are a few neurological diseases that are associated with low lying lids.  You'll want to see your eye doctor immediately  if your lids droop suddenly, or if it is only one lid that droops.

Upneeq is a prescription medication, so you'll need to see an eye doctor be evaluated for the disease associated with droopy lids in order to get a prescription.  But, as I said, there are several normal reasons to have low lying lids.

  1. Age: the normal aging process can cause our lids to come down slowly.
  2. Eye surgery: if your eyes were held up during the surgery, sometimes it can cause a temporary or a permanent droop in the eyelid.
  3. Genetics: it runs in the family to have a heavy or droopy upper lid. Maybe your mom, dad, brother, or sister has it too.

Why Would You want to Lift the Lids?

There are tons of reasons you may want the lids to be raised.  Some of them are visually motivated and some of them are cosmetic:

  1. You just want to look a little more wide-eyed.
  2. You're tired of people asking your if you're tired
  3. You don't see as well as you used to, especially towards the end of the day.  When the lids start to come down, it's hard to keep them up.
  4. You've lost some peripheral vision. Your droopy lids are blocking your view to the side.
  5. You don't want to have eyelid surgery.

Look at these great results:

How Do You Use It?

It's simple.  The drop comes in single serving vials.  The individual vial is packaged inside a foil package. Take the vial out of the package.  Twist the top off of the vial.  Place one drop in each eye. The drop takes about 10 minutes to start working.  It works on both the upper and the lower lids to give you a wide open look.  It lasts eight to 12 hours.

You only need to use Upneeq once a day.  You can use it any time of the day, even when you're on your way out the door.  Use it any time you want your eyes to look great.  Your eyes will be white and wide open in just a matter of minutes.

How Should You Not Use Upneeq

There are just a couple of health reasons that you would not want to use Upneeq.  If you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart disease you should not use Upneeq.  Patients who may be taking an alpha adrenergic agonist or a beta blocker may have an adverse reaction to their blood pressure. If that happens in your case, simply discontinue using the drop.

How Do You Get Upneeq?

Upneeq is available by prescription only.  Contact your eyecare provider to get a prescription for the medication. The doctor will look at your current medications and the positioning of your lids to recommend whether or not you're a candidate for using Upneeq.  Even though it's a prescription medication, Upneeq is not covered by your medical insurance.  It is considered to be cosmetic.

Personal Results

I had some fun using the product myself.  Here are my before and after photos:

     Dr. T Before Upneeq

  Dr. T After Upneeq

The results lasted about 12 hours.  The whites of my eyes appeared whiter.  And, my upper lids were lifted.  Since my right eye droops more than my left, I felt Upneeq balanced my eyelid height better.  Overall, I was happy with the cosmetic outcome.
