#207: Bad Habits that Make Dry Eyes Worse

Apr 09, 2024

Sometimes my patients share cringe-worthy practices with me in my clinic. These are things they do with their eyes that they don't know are harmful. It's time to address these habits head-on. Let's talk about bad eye habits.

Bad Eye Habit #1) Using Get the Red Out Drops

Using drops that promise to "get the red out" are not helping your eyes. Stop using them! You're merely covering up the problem. If you're constantly using these drops, you're ignoring the warning signs. Redness is your body's way of signaling danger or caution. So why cover it up instead of fixing it?

Those "get the red out" drops squeeze the blood vessels on the front of your eyes closed. Thus, the drops control the redness, but they don't eliminate the inflammation. They're not good for you, often containing preservatives that add to the problem. And after about four hours, they stop working, and your eyes get red again. So, you end up putting in more drops, loading up on preservatives, and restricting blood flow, hindering your eyes' ability to heal and reduce inflammation. Instead, find out what's wrong. Consult your eye care practitioner. Get help for the real problem.

Bad Eye Habit #2) Using Tap Water to Moisten your Eyes

Putting water in your eyes, especially tap water, does more harm than good. Your tap water is loaded with chemicals and chlorine. It is not pH balanced for eyes and won't help to keep them moisturized. Resist the temptation to rinse your eyes in the shower or sink.

Your tears are made up of over 2,000 components that support the health of your eyes. These include oils, electrolytes, and proteins which nourish, protect, and heal the front of the eye. Instead of using tap water, use preservative-free artificial tears, like Ivizia. These not only provide moisture but also bring essential nutrients, unlike tap water filled with impurities.

Bad Eye Habit #3) Rubbing Your Eyes

It may feel like relief, but chronic rubbing can deform the front surface of your eyes, leading to keratoconus, a serious eye disease. Don't rub your eyes! For those seeking healthier alternatives, check out a recent post on healthy eye habits for more insights.

 CONCLUSION:

In the meantime, break free from the cycle of bad eye habits.

  • Don't use "get the red out" drops
  • Avoid putting tap water in your eyes
  • Resist the urge to rub them
