Daily Eyelid Cleansing: Why Baby Shampoo Is No Longer the Best Choice

If you’ve been told in the past to clean your eyelids with baby shampoo, you’re not alone. For many years, it was a commonly recommended home remedy for eyelid hygiene, especially for conditions like blepharitis (eyelid inflammation).

But eye care has evolved, and so has the science! Today, we know there are safer, more effective options designed specifically for the delicate skin and glands around the eyes.

Why Daily Eyelid Cleansing Matters

Your eyelids contain tiny oil glands that help keep your tears healthy and your eyes comfortable. When these glands become clogged or inflamed, it can lead to:

  • Red, irritated eyelids
  • Crusting or flakes at the lash line
  • Burning, dryness, or gritty sensation
  • Worsening dry eye symptoms

Keeping your eyelids clean is an important part of daily eye care. And, how you clean them truly matters.

Why Baby Shampoo Isn’t Ideal for Your Eyes

  1.  It’s Designed for Hair, Not Eyelids

Baby shampoo contains surfactants, which are cleaning agents meant to break down oils on the scalp. The oils on your eyelids, however, are very different.  In fact, they’re essential for a healthy tear film.

Using baby shampoo around the eyes can:

  • Disrupt the tear film
  • Dry out the eye surface
  • Worsen inflammation of the oil glands

In other words, it may clean the lashes, but it can make dry eye symptoms worse over time.

  1. Preservatives Can Irritate the Eye Surface

Even gentle baby shampoos contain preservatives to keep them stable. Unfortunately, these preservatives can be irritating to the sensitive tissues of the eyes and eyelids.

Repeated exposure may:

  • Irritate the front surface of the eye
  • Increase inflammation
  • Reduce comfort, especially with daily use

  1. Baby Shampoo Doesn’t Address the Root Cause

One of the biggest issues in blepharitis is bacteria and biofilm (a sticky layer of microbes) along the eyelid margins. Baby shampoo does not effectively reduce this bacterial load.

However, eyelid cleansers specifically formulated for the delicate eye area, like hypochlorous acid sprays. This type of cleanser, which are widely available at pharmacies, is designed precisely for eye use and have been shown to:

  • Reduce bacteria safely
  • Break down biofilm
  • Support healthier eyelids and lashes

A Better Approach to Eyelid Hygiene

Modern eyelid cleansers are:

  • Eye-safe and non-irritating
  • Preservative-free or naturally occurring
  • Designed specifically for daily eyelid use

They clean the eyelids without disrupting the tear film, making them a better long-term solution for people with blepharitis or dry eye.

The Bottom Line

While baby shampoo was once a common recommendation, it’s time to move on. Your eyes deserve products designed for YOUR EYES, not hair.

Daily eyelid cleansing remains an essential part of eye health. Choosing the right cleanser can make a meaningful difference in comfort, inflammation, and long-term eye wellness.

If you’re unsure which option is best for you, your eye care provider can help guide you toward a routine that supports healthier, more comfortable eyes.
