#111: How to Travel with Dry Eyes During COVID-19?

Jun 01, 2021

I was able to take my first trip a couple of weeks ago to an in-person education meeting.  I was so excited to travel again and traveling now causes some new problems for those of us who suffer from dry eyes.

Getting ready to go on a trip caused me to think a bit about packing up my dry eye supplies.  It is so important not to skip out on your eye care routine even if you are out of town.  The results of missing a few nights of care can be disastrous.  I've been there.

I previously wrote a blog about traveling with dry eyes.  You can check out that blog here.  It goes over specifically all the things you need to pack in your carry-on versus your checked bag.

What has changed?

Airlines are requiring you to wear a mask for the duration of your flight.  Mask wearing can be particularly...

Teeth vs. Eyes: Which Needs Daily Care?

Nov 17, 2020

What is the one thing we all do before heading out the door in the morning?

No matter where we live, or where we work, we all do one thing before heading out the door. I don’t care how you were brought up, you do this one thing every day.  We all brush our teeth.  It’s ingrained in us.  And, it’s probably even one of the first things you do right after getting out of bed.

We brush our teeth because having bad breath is embarrassing.  But why do we have bad breath in the morning?  You haven’t eaten anything in hours.  Surely you brush your teeth before you went to bed as well.

Why is our breath bad in the morning?

Throughout the day when we are awake, we swallow multiple times a minute. The act of swallowing rinses away the bacteria that lives in our our mouth normally. ...

How to Alleviate Dry Eye an Interview with Dwayne Lewis

Sep 22, 2020

In this interview, I review the 4 Steps of Simple Dry Eye treatment plan and the importance of having a treatment plan that addresses the symptoms of your dry eyes.

Let me do a quick review for you here.

Step One: Hydrate - Use an artificial tear to give the front surface of the eye the moisture it needs to keep the eye healthy.

Step two: Harmonize - Using a cleanser for the lids and lashes on a daily basis will keep the bacteria living there in check.  Over population of bacteria will lead to redness and irritation.

Step three: Heat - A warm compress will help to melt the oils trapped in the oil glans lining the lid margins.  Once thee oil is able to flow freely out of the glands, the oil will coat the watery portion of the tears and prevent it from evaporating.

Step four: Heal - Ome...

Morning Routine

Jan 13, 2020
Do you have a morning routine?  In my last blog, I talked about a few steps I take to get myself mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for the day.  But, I also have a few steps that I ask myself and my patients do to prepare their eyes for the day.

This fall, both of my children were in what we now call, “big girl school“.  No more school bus for one and Mother's Day Out for the other.  We all walk out the door together, and we are dressed and ready to take on the day.

So this year, I have been doing a lot of thinking about morning routines. How do my kids not know that they’re supposed to put their shoes on before we walk out the door?  It was trying at first, but we are getting the hang of it all now.

To make things go smoothly, I have even gone so far as to write ...
