Understanding the Cornea: A Marvel of the Human Eye

Today, I want to share something fascinating about one of my favorite parts of the eye. The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye, and it's the very first place where light enters our eye, allowing us to see clearly. But beyond its role in vision, the cornea is an extraordinary part of our anatomy for a few other reasons.

The Cornea's Unique Sensitivity

The cornea is the most highly innervated tissue in the entire human body. Meaning it has more nerve endings than any other part of us. It's an incredible generator of pain, something we’re acutely aware of whenever we get anything in our eyes.

Spring brings a burst of colors and fragrances, but for many, it also marks the onset of ocular allergy symptoms. Itchy, watery eyes and incessant sneezing can make enjoying the season a challenge. However, with a few proactive steps, you can alleviate these symptoms and embrace the beauty of spring with clarity and comfort.

How do you know if it's an allergy?

There are a couple of symptoms that are the same between dry eyes and allergies so it can be hard to distinguish between the two problems. However, timing seems to play a big part in ocular allergies. If you suddenly notice the symptoms below, it's most likely to be allergy. 

  • redness
  • watering
  • Itching - this is the hallmark sign of allergy

#147: How to Prevent Snow Blindness

This week, I'm going to talk to you about something that probably, you never thought someone from Louisiana would teach you about.  It's something called snow blindness.  It can occur when you go outdoors and you enjoy yourself for the day when there's snow on the ground and you didn't protect your eyes properly.

When we go outdoors on a cold day I'm sure you've put on your long Johns, so  your legs will be nice and warm. You put on your winter boots, you put on your coat, you put on your hood, you put on your gloves, and finally you go outside and you enjoy yourself all day. You've protected your body, but you forgot one crucial thing because maybe it was also cloudy.  You didn't wear eye protection with an Ultra Violet (UV) blocker.
