Do Your Eyes Feel More Dry in the Mornings?

Feb 02, 2021

It is said that dry eye has as many symptoms as it has causes.  One person's dry eyes may feel completely different than the next person's dry eyes.  Some patients complain that they are dry and scratchy and the next complains that they are irritated and watery.

Some of my patients feel their dry eyes feel worst and night and some feel worse in the mornings.  When you have eye irritation first thing in the morning, there are usually a few key reasons.

One of the first questions I like to ask my dry eye patients is, "Do your eyes feel more tired and irritated first thing in the morning or at the end of the day?"  The reason that I like to ask this question is that I want to get to the root cause of the dry eye symptoms.

Knowing when the eyes are most dry tells me a lot about the lids.  ...

Guide to Lid and Lash Cleansers

Jan 12, 2021

Eyelid and lash cleansers are important to use on a daily basis to remove excessive amounts of bacteria.  We all have bacteria that are normal to live on our lids and lashes.  Cleaning your eyelids and lashes is part of the four-step daily practice I recommend to all of my dry eye patients.  If you're not sure what I'm referring to, check out this blog here.

The bacteria can become overpopulated on the lids and lashes from many factors like not removing all of our makeup at the end of the day, a change in hormones (pregnancy, birth control, menopause), or even a change in the season of the year.

Using a lid cleanser on a regular basis will keep the bacteria levels down to their normal amounts.  This helps to keep the eyelids feeling comfortable and keep the oil glands in your lids ...

Eye Infections During Quarantine - Will you be next?

Jun 29, 2020

After several months of some length of self-quarantine, we are all beginning to notice new things about ourselves.  This has been an interesting topic in many a Facebook post over the past few months.

In the health care industry, we have found many different consequences of staying indoors and keeping away from others.  The country may have slowed the spread of COVID-19 with these measures, but other health dilemmas have come about.

In the eye care industry, we have noticed an increase in eyelid infections, namely styes.  A stye is an infection in the oil glands of the eyelid.   The lid becomes red, tender, and inflamed.   As the infection continues, it tends to concentrate in one round area which is red, raised, and tender to the touch.

There are two types of styes:

  • External: ...

Which doctor is best to treatment my dry eyes?

Sep 18, 2019

Who is the better doctor for treating your dry eye symptoms? Would it be an ophthalmologist or an optometrist?  I’m sure at this stage you are curious to know who in your community is would be the best at treating dry eyes.  And, maybe you are confused about the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist.  Aren't they both eye doctors?  Is there really a difference?

Yes, there is a difference. Optometrists (OD) are doctors to have a significant portion of their training in studying vision.  They are the experts when you want to improve your eyesight with glasses or contacts lenses.  They also prescribe medications to treat diseases and do some medical procedures.

Ophthalmologists (MD) have had a significant portion of their training in treating eye diseases with medic...

The 3 Worst Things you do with your Mascara

Sep 04, 2019

As an eye doctor, I get up close and personal with women's eye makeup every day.  I routinely use a microscope to examine the eye.  This can make the eyelashes about 20 times bigger than the way you see them in a regular mirror.

The horrors I see on people's eyelids are incredible.  Makeup caked up into the lashes and in the corner of the eye is only the tip of the iceberg.  That built-up gunk leads to inflammation, irritation, and infection over time.

Here are the three biggest beauty blunders I see women committing with their mascara:

1. Sleeping with it

Not removing your eye makeup at the end of the day is one of the worst things you can do for your sensitive eyes.  After all, you wouldn't go to bed without brushing your teeth, right?  The same risk of cavities applies to the ...

Want Beautiful Lashes

Jul 01, 2019

In recent years, there has been an obsession with having long and full eyelashes in fashion and it has penetrated mainstream society.  I think we have always wanted to have long, full lashes.  We associate these long, fluttery lashes with beauty.  And, in the last 5 - 7 years tons of lash salons have popped up in every city.

Many of my friends and patients ask me questions about eyelash enhancers and ways they can get their lashes to look longer and more full.   And, I think it is time to have that conversation here.  But, I realized that we needed to have a discussion about developing your own healthy set of lashes first.

Before you start thinking about making your lashes longer, you need to know whether or not your lashes are healthy.  There may be a reason your lashes aren't as f...
