Dry eye is a disease that is driven by inflammation. Inflammation that comes into your eye will create the feelings and sensations of dryness. Patients who suffer from chronic inflammatory conditions are more prone to having dry eye symptoms.  These conditions are often autoimmune disorders like Sjogren’s syndrome and arthritis.
 
Reducing the amount of inflammation inside the eye can be achieved topically with eyedrops. There are several prescription eyedrops that were designed specifically to bring down the inflammation of dry eye.

Happy New Year - Setting Intentions

Happy new year so glad to have you with me as we journey through the year.  As an eye doctor, I am thrilled to be in the year 2020.  Maybe have not heard this before, but many of the doctors considered dry eye disease to be a vision disorder.  One of the hallmark signs of dry eyes is fluctuating or blurred vision.  To me, this year of 2020, is a great year to spread the word on alleviating dry eye symptoms and causes from your life.
 
This past weekend, I was on a retreat with one of my closest to gal pals and dry eye expert, Dr. Jennifer Planitz.  We spent the weekend talking about our goals for this epic year.  It prompted me to decide to share with you some of the ways I set intentions for both my day and my year.  I am hoping you will set one intention to care for your eyes in 2020.

Masqueraders of Dry Eye

At masquerade parties, mystery can be really fun.  Mardi Gras is an awesome time of year to wear a costume, crazy hat, or a mask.  But, I am not a fan of mystery in my clinical practice.  Dry eye disease can often masquerade as something else because there are other diseases that have the same symptoms.  And unfortunately, patients will sometime self-treat the wrong disease for weeks or months before coming in to see me. 

One of the biggest masqueraders of dry eye disease is allergy symptoms.  Here in Louisiana, my patients will blame everything that happens to them on allergies.  And because our winters are fairly mild, something is blooming here year round.  Allergy season can really be any season.   For instance to my patients a headache = allergies, dry cough = allergies, watery eyes ...
