Jun 03, 2022

If you have dry eyes, it's important to understand why CLEAN makeup is so important for your eyes and body.  Check out some of the basic ideas around Clean makeup in this blog, and listen to a true Clean beauty expert weigh in on the importance of these products.  Switching to wearing CLEAN makeup you can prevent both eye irritation and wrinkles!!!

Now that you're fired up about the importance of using Clean Makeup, let's review the three best clean makeup products for sensitive eyes in 2022.  If you feel like your makeup makes your eyes red and irritated, then switching out a few products will be well worth your time.

I certainly understand how you feel.  Just a few years ago, I was in your shoes too. I was embarrassed that my eye makeup would run down my face by the end of the workday.  I thought, "Who would listen to me as an expert in eye care when I can't wear makeup either."  This led me into doing a lot of research on which eye makeup products would be best for my eyes.

I know how frustrating it is to struggle with buying another product that just doesn't work.  Or, you wonder how long you can use it before the irritation comes back.  I've had so many of my patients tell me that they have thrown out more eye makeup in the past six months than they can even remember buying in the 10 years prior.

It's all about using clean makeup and clean beauty products. I totally understand what you're feeling, I have been there myself.  You can stop wasting money on more products that won't work.  These are my three favorite beauty products I use every day on my sensitive eyes.

#1) Makeup Remover

The most important step in your Clean beauty routine is taking your makeup off.  This makes your makeup remover the most important part of your clean beauty routine.  You see, clean beauty isn't just about getting the right products and eliminating those toxins from your skin and eyes.  But, it is also about not putting the products in the wrong places or leaving them on your skin and eyes too long.

Even clean makeup can irritate your eyes if you go to sleep without removing it or it gets inside your eyes.  When you fall asleep with your makeup on, bacteria take up living in those makeup particles.  It makes a fine home for them to live and breed.  Soon, you will have an overgrowth of bacteria.  Bacteria causes irritation, inflammation, redness, and leads to wrinkles!

Since it is such an important step in your beauty routine there are lots of different styles (5 in total) of eye makeup removers on the market.  Check out the guide on how to choose the one that is best for you, download the guide here.  Let's discuss two types here: Makeup remover wipes and clothes,

Makeup Remover Wipes

There are two wipes that I am particularly fond of.  These are the Eye Proof Refreshing Towelettes by Eyes Are The Story.  They come individually wrapped, so they're easy to grab when you're on the go.  These wipes refresh strained and tired eyes without leaving behind a greasy residue.

Makeup Remover Cloths

Makeup remover cloths are a favorite of mine for two reasons.  First, they are reusable.  You don't throw them away with each use.  Instead, you machine wash and dry them just like a towel.  You can use the same ones for months or even years.

Second, there are absolutely no chemicals involved in using them on your face.  Just add water.  That's all you need.  Simple.

My favorite eye makeup remover cloth is by Norwex.  It has a soft suede feel, and the fibers are tightly woven specifically to trap the particles of makeup and remove them from your face and eyes.  The cloth is so well made, you won't even have to scrub.

The second one I like is called Erase Your Face.  These are more fluffy than the Norwex cloths.  They are luxuriously plush and comfortable on the delicate skin of your eyes.  You can find these at Bed Bath & Beyond.  They come in different colors. I particularly like this black one because it doesn't get stained from removing my mascara.

Those are two of the five different kinds of eye makeup removers. I would love to share with you the makeup remover guide for sensitive eyes.  It lists all of the five different types of eye makeup removers, and it guides you through how to choose the best type for your skin.  Plus, there are links to each one.

#2) Eye Shadow Sticks

Powdered eye shadow can flake off and get into your eyes.  When it's swimming around in your tear film it will irritate your eyes all day long.

Check out what it looks like when your eye makeup is floating around in your tears.  Those tiny particles in the beam of light are bits of powdered eye shadow.  They cause tiny micro-abrasions on the delicate tissues of your eyes every time you blink.  No wonder her eyes were red and irritated.

Use eye shadow sticks instead.  The eye shadow is applied with a crayon and sticks to the lids all day long.  My favorites are the Visionary Eye Shadow Sticks by twenty/twenty beauty.  They come in 3 different colors and the creamy formula lasts all day.  Plus, this company is founded by an ophthalmologist who was tired of her patients not having options when they were trying to have healthy eyes and look great too.  Dr. Diane Hilal-Campo is the founder of twenty/twenty beauty.

#3) Mascara

Studies have shown that women apply mascara on average nine times a week.  If you did the math on that, you'll note it's more than just once a day.  Women are re-applying their mascara throughout the day.

There are now two awesome Clean mascaras on the market: one by EYES ARE THE STORY and the other is by twenty/twenty beauty..  These mascaras are great because they are dark and rich in color.  They go on evenly and last all day.  All of the ingredients are non-toxic and won't irritate your eyes.

Switching the beauty product that you use closest to your eyes and most often can make a big difference in how your eyes feel every day.  Clean ingredients are key to having your eyes feel more comfortable.  And, as Dr. Campo likes to say, "Healthy eyes are beautiful".

CONCLUSION

Starting a clean beauty routine doesn't have to break the bank.  You can switch out your products slowly.  I definitely recommend starting with the three types I have listed here.  And, if you would like to dive a little deeper into Clean Beauty products, you can check out the CLEAN Makeup Course.  It will walk you through the steps to getting your makeup routine in check to eliminate the redness and irritation on your eyes.
