3 Best CLEAN Makeup Products for your Eyes

Feb 16, 2021

In the last blog, I covered why CLEAN makeup is so important for your eyes and body.  Check out the blog here, if you missed it.   You probably realized the importance of wearing clean makeup.  And, you know that by switching to CLEAN makeup you can prevent both eye irritation and wrinkles!!!

Now that you're fired up about the importance of using Clean Makeup, let's review the three best clean makeup products for sensitive eyes.  If you feel like your makeup makes your eyes red and irritated, then switching out a few products will be well worth your time.

I certainly understand how you feel.  Just a few years ago, I was in your shoes too. I was embarrassed that my eye makeup would run down my face by the end of the workday.  I thought, "Who would listen to me as an expert in eye care when I can't even keep my makeup on myself."  This led me into doing a lot of research on which eye makeup products would be best for my eyes.

I know how frustrating it is to struggle with buying another product that just doesn't work.  Or, you wonder how long you can use it before the irritation comes back.  I've had so many of my patients tell me that they have thrown out more eye makeup in the past six months than they can even remember buying in the 10 years prior.

It's all about using clean makeup and clean beauty products. I totally understand what you're feeling, I have been there myself.  You can stop wasting money on more products that won't work.  I've got you.  These are my three favorite beauty products I use every day on my sensitive eyes.

#1) Mascara

Studies have shown that women apply mascara on average nine times a week.  If you did the math on that, you'll note it's more than just once a day.  Maybe women are re-applying their mascara at lunch or between work and meeting their co-workers for happy hour.

I think I can go out on a limb here and safely say that mascara is every woman's favorite eye makeup.  We want our eyes to "pop" and have beautiful long lashes as well.

My absolutely favorite Clean Mascara is made by EYES ARE THE STORY.  This mascara is awesome because it is nice and dark. It goes on very evenly. It lasts all day, and it is not toxic or irritating.  It is sold in a 3-pack of mini mascara wands that you throw it out once a month.

This particular clean beauty brand was formulated by a team of eye doctors.  These doctors also played a role in the TFOS DEWS II Report, which is the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop number 2.  This document was published in 2017. It is considered to be the dry eye manual for eye doctors.

These eye doctors got together to formulate these products.  All of the products in this line are vegan, cruelty-free, and formulated according to European regulations, banning more than 1300 ingredients frequently found in U.S. cosmetics.  They absolutely have your eye health in their minds.  Eye Proof Mascara Trio Set is my favorite mascara.  I hope you love it too.

#2) Eye Shadow Primer

The second product is the touch-up concealer pen from Beautycounter.  I use this one every day, for two reasons.  First, I like to pat it on and cover up those dark circles under the eyes and make my eyes look bright and fresh in the mornings.

Second, if I decide I'm going to wear powdered eyeshadow, then I put the concealer pen on my upper lid before using powdered shadow.  The concealer pen helps the shadow stick and last longer. Otherwise, the eye shadow can flake off and get into your tear film and irritate your eyes all day long.

Check out what it looks like when your eye makeup is floating around in your tears all day.  Can you see the tiny particles in the beam of light?  Now, imagine that those are causing tiny micro-abrasions on the delicate tissues of your eyes every time you blink.  No wonder her eyes were red and irritated.

#3) Makeup Remover

I know I have said it before, but your makeup remover is the most important part of your clean beauty routine.  You see, clean beauty isn't just about getting the right products and eliminating those toxins from your skin and eyes.  But, it is also about not putting the products in the wrong places or leaving them on your skin and eyes too long.  Even clean makeup can irritate your eyes if you go to sleep without removing it or it gets inside your eyes.

Since it is such an important step in your beauty routine.  Let's discuss two different types of eye makeup removers.  There are actually 5 different categories of eye makeup removers on the market.  If you would like to get a list of the best clean makeup remover brands and a guide on how to choose the one that is best for you, download the guide here.

Makeup Remover Wipes

There are two wipes that I am particularly fond of.  These are the Eye Proof Refreshing Towelettes by Eyes Are The Story.  They come individually wrapped, so they're easy to grab when you're on the go.  These wipes refresh strained and tired eyes without leaving behind a greasy residue.

In this category, I also like the Beautycounter One-Step Makeup Remover Wipes.  These remove makeup and cleanse your skin in one step.  They contain a micellar formula that traps makeup, dirt, and impurities, then gently whisks them away.  These are available in a pack of 30 disposable wipes.

Makeup Remover Cloths

Makeup remover cloths are a favorite of mine for two reasons.  First, they are reusable.  You don't throw them away with each use.  Instead, you machine wash and dry them just like a towel.  You can use the same ones for months or even years.

Second, there are absolutely no chemicals involved in using them on your face.  Just add water.  That's all you need.  Simple.

My favorite eye makeup remover cloth is by Norwex.  It has a soft suede feel, and the fibers are tightly woven specifically to trap the particles of makeup and remove them from your face and eyes.  The cloth is so well made, you won't even have to scrub.

The second one I like is called Erase Your Face.  These are more fluffy than the Norwex cloths.  They are luxuriously plush and comfortable on the delicate skin of your eyes.  You can find these at Bed Bath & Beyond.  I particularly like this black one because it doesn't get stained from removing my mascara.  The cloths come in a four-pack of different colors.

Those are two of the five different kinds of eye makeup removers. I would love to share with you the makeup remover guide for sensitive eyes.  It lists all of the five different types of eye makeup removers.  And, there are links to each one so that you can get it for yourself.

CONCLUSION

Starting a clean beauty routine doesn't have to break the bank.  You can switch out your products slowly.  I definitely recommend starting with the three types I have listed here.  And, if you would like to dive a little deeper into Clean Beauty products, you can check out the CLEAN Makeup Course.  It will walk you through the steps to getting your makeup routine in check to eliminate the redness and irritation on your eyes.
