#235: Allergy Treatments to Avoid this Spring

May 19, 2025

The Worst Thing You Can Do for Your Eyes This Allergy Season. Here’s What to Do Instead

Spring flowers are beautiful, but they can wreak havoc on your eyes. If you’re dealing with itchy, red, watery eyes during allergy season, you might be tempted to grab an over-the-counter antihistamine like Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, or Xyzal. But if dry, irritated eyes are also part of the problem, these over-the-counter remedies may make things worse.

Let’s explore a few ways to have eyes that feel great, see great, and look great, even when allergy season is in full swing.

The Antihistamine Mistake

While oral antihistamines are great for sneezing and nasal congestion, they come with a hidden downside: they dry out your eyes.

These medications work by reducing histamine, the chemical your bo...

How to Keep Your Eyes Comfortable this Spring

Spring is finally here in Louisiana! 🌸 While the warmer weather and blooming flowers are beautiful, spring allergy season can bring itchy, watery, and irritated eyes for many people. Let's review some simple steps to protect your eyes this season and keep them feeling comfortable.

Shield Your Eyes from Pollen with Sunglasses

Pollen is one of the biggest culprits behind spring eye irritation. When you're outdoors, wearing sunglasses can help keep pollen from getting into your eyes. For the best protection:
🕶 Choose oversized or wraparound sunglasses to block pollen from the sides.
🌞 Wear them even on cloudy days—UV rays and allergens are still present.

Check out this blog for a step by step guide to choose the sunglasses that are bes

#138: How Smoke Affects Dry Eyes

Dec 24, 2021
Happy Holidays. This time of year there are many opportunities to get into smoky situations.  Unfortunately, smoky areas are very irritating for those of us who suffer from dry eyes.  There are two types of smoke that I find my patients are getting themselves into this time of year.  These two types of smoke are coming from fireplaces and from secondhand smoke.

With the weather getting cooler in most areas there are lots of opportunities to come into contact with fireplace smoke. The smoke from fireplaces is particularly troublesome because you want to be close to the fire. It’s making it warmer perhaps it’s part of the atmosphere.  Sometimes, the smoke doesn't bother you in the moment, but the symptoms that it may cause even the next day can be particularly painful.

#126: Castor Oil for Healthy Lashes

Sep 21, 2021

Many of my patients have started asking me about using something using castor oil on their eyelashes.  They want to know if it is safe to use and if it is okay for dry eyes?  Castor oil is used to condition the lashes.  Eyelashes are like other hairs on your body.  They do better when they are conditioned just like the hair on your head.

We coat our eyelashes with mascara all day.  Many mascara brands, especially waterproof formulas, are drying to the lashes.  Then, we remove the mascara, but rarely do we put anything on the lashes to nourish and strengthen them.  This would be like washing your hair without ever using conditioner.  You can imagine how your hair would get dry and brittle.

The same thing happens to our eyelashes.  Coating the lashes with mascara and removing the mascara w...

#106: Comfortably Wear Contact Lenses during Allergy Season

Apr 20, 2021

I'm going to talk today about a question that my patients ask me all of the time: "How can I wear my contact lenses during allergy season?" "They're itchy, they're red, they run water all over the place, I don't know what to do, I can't get my contacts in!" I've got three tips for you today on how to wear your contact lenses during allergy season.

Tip #1) Take a Break

Tip number one: Take a break! You don't have to wear your contact lenses every day! I know you don't want to hear this, but maybe just during this season, save them for special occasions. Wear them occasionally. Wear them less time during the day, take them out when you get home, or only wear them when you're going out. Take a little break.

Tip #2) Wear a Daily-disposable Contact LensPrecision 1 Dailies Review – Lenses For Less

Number two, wear a daily-disposabl...

Fall Tips for Dry Eye Sufferers

Oct 20, 2020

Happy Fall Y'all!

Fall is here.  Lots of people tell me that fall is their favorite season.  Usually, after the incredible heat of a Louisiana summer, we are ready to enjoy some chill in the air.  Of course, with a change in seasons, there are different things that dry eye sufferers need to take note of.  I've got a few tips to help your eyes stay comfortable during this fall season.

Control Your Outdoor Environment

This time of year, people are usually out (thanks COVID) enjoying football games, apple picking, pumpkin patches, hayrides, and maybe even a bonfire.  With all these fun outdoor activities, what could go wrong for a dry eye sufferer?

Allergies

Anytime there is a change in season, there is a change in the plant life surrounding you.  So, perhaps you weren't allergic to ...
