#206: Solar Eclipse Viewing for Dry Eye Sufferers

Apr 06, 2024

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk, and you may be able to glimpse the Sun's outer atmosphere, or corona.

Throughout a solar eclipse, the moon casts a shadow onto the Earth's surface, creating a temporary dimming of daylight. This phenomenon can be observed within the path of totality, where the sun is completely obscured, as well as in regions experiencing a partial eclipse, where the sun appears partially covered by the moon.

When Will it Happen?

The 2024 total solar eclipse will occur happen on Monday, April 8, 2024. It will be visible in the continental United States, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada...

#204: A Guide to Alleviate Eye Dryness and Irritation

Mar 02, 2024

Are you tired of your eyes looking red? Do they sting and burn throughout the day? If you'd like to have eyes that don't feel dry and scratchy, then I'd like to show you a simple process of how you can go back to a time when you didn't even know your eyes were there.

Now, you're probably thinking that this is impossible because you've already tried everything out there. And honestly, I used to feel the same way about my own eyes. But, one day, I broke down all of the information that I was learning in seminars, books, and  journals articles, and I found that everything fell into just a couple of categories.

The majority of dry eye sufferers and even many eye doctors don't know what you're about to learn. They all think you that the cure to dry eyes is just to lubricate them. You on...

#187: New Dry Eye Relief Product that makes Travel Easy

Apr 23, 2023

Traveling can be a little tricky when you have sensitive eyes or suffer from dry eye disease. There seems to be added environmental stressors around every corner when you are in a new setting. I travel often and I've developed a little kit of products that I'm always sure to grab when I leave town.

The last time I traveled I added a new product to the kit.  It's definitely going to be a staple of my daily care regimen whether I'm on the go or not.  I love this product so much that I don't just use it when I travel and its brand new, so I'm excited to talk to you about it. It's called Neutra Wipe from Tear Restore.

First, let's review the 4-simple steps to dry eye care:

  1. Hydrate with an artificial tear
  2. Harmonize with a lid and lash cleanser
  3. Heat with a warm compress mask
  4. Heal w

#150: Help! My Eyes are so Dry, I Can’t Finish My Work

Mar 22, 2022

A lot of patients come to my office because their dry eyes are affecting their ability to work.  Some days your eyes may be bothering you so much that you just can't continue to work for another minute. What are you going to do now?

I don't know if you know this, but I spend a lot of time on the computer myself.  I wrote a book a few years ago.  I write articles for Optometric journals and prepare lectures to present to colleagues.  I also have a blog and a website. All of these things can cause me to be on the computer into the wee hours. Often my eyes own eyes are tired, and I feel like I just can't keep going.

I've found some things that really help.  I have done a number of blogs to help you adjust your workstation and help you keep working.  And, I've prepared a Guide to help you...

#140: 2022 and a New You

Jan 04, 2022

Happy New Year!

I like to take the time at the beginning of the year to think about where I am going on purpose.   A lot of times, we feel that life is just happening to us, but that is not the case.  We are all living the life that we ourselves have created.

Take a minute to look back over 2021 and be thankful for all that you were able to create in your own life.  There is one accomplishment in 2021 that I am most proud of (see #3 below).  But, there were tons of accomplishments along the way as well.  Celebrating your wins is part of living a full life.  You put in the work to accomplish them, so don't hold back on giving yourself the credit you deserve. Here are 3 of my wins from this year:

  1. 2021 marked my 20th year since graduation from Optometry School.  It's hard to believe I h

#102: Demodex Blepharitis and a New Study on Tea Tree Oil

Mar 23, 2021

Demodex mites.  This is a tricky topic to bring up with my patients.  The truth of the matter is that with age, we all have some Demodex mites living on our eyelashes.  For some reason (science still isn't sure why) these mites are normal to have on our lashes.

Yet, this topic always gives my patients the heebie-geebies.  I want to reassure you all that having them on your lids doesn't mean you are an unclean person.

And, going overboard trying to rid them from your eyes can cause more problems than just the irritation of having them.  So, slow down.  Don't freak out.  Let's discuss these Demodex mites....

What are Demodex Mites?

Demodex is a small mite that buries itself into the follicles of the eyelashes and eyebrows.  This mite is in the same family as the mite that causes man...
