There are five steps you can take to make your eyes pop, even when they're dry or sensitive, when you're out for Valentine's day. On this night especially, you don't want to hide your eyes because you're embarrassed by their redness.  Eyes are the window to the soul.  And, we all know that making eye contact is key in building relationships.  And, Valentine's Day is all about relationships.  So, let's stop hiding our eyes, and get them looking gorgeous.

STEP 1) LET THEM POP

#141: Your New Evening Routine

Jan 12, 2022

There have been so many new dry eye products to come out in the past two years. I wanted to update what I am doing personally for my nighttime care routine.

Step 1: Make up remover

When you are getting ready for bed at night, we must remember my golden rule. If you have been following me for a while, you know, remove your eye makeup.

I really love makeup remover wipes. A few of my favorite are the Norwex makeup removal cloth set, Beauty Counter one-step makeup remover wipes and the Eye Proof Refreshing Towelettes from Eyes are the Story. They are super convenient and easy to use. So first step is to remove your makeup.

  Step 2: Cleanse the Face

I love using Eyes Are The Story facial cleanser. It feels very silky on my skin. And I know the ingredients are great for my eye...

#138: How Smoke Affects Dry Eyes

Dec 24, 2021
Happy Holidays. This time of year there are many opportunities to get into smoky situations.  Unfortunately, smoky areas are very irritating for those of us who suffer from dry eyes.  There are two types of smoke that I find my patients are getting themselves into this time of year.  These two types of smoke are coming from fireplaces and from secondhand smoke.

With the weather getting cooler in most areas there are lots of opportunities to come into contact with fireplace smoke. The smoke from fireplaces is particularly troublesome because you want to be close to the fire. It’s making it warmer perhaps it’s part of the atmosphere.  Sometimes, the smoke doesn't bother you in the moment, but the symptoms that it may cause even the next day can be particularly painful.

#126: Castor Oil for Healthy Lashes

Sep 21, 2021

Many of my patients have started asking me about using something using castor oil on their eyelashes.  They want to know if it is safe to use and if it is okay for dry eyes?  Castor oil is used to condition the lashes.  Eyelashes are like other hairs on your body.  They do better when they are conditioned just like the hair on your head.

We coat our eyelashes with mascara all day.  Many mascara brands, especially waterproof formulas, are drying to the lashes.  Then, we remove the mascara, but rarely do we put anything on the lashes to nourish and strengthen them.  This would be like washing your hair without ever using conditioner.  You can imagine how your hair would get dry and brittle.

The same thing happens to our eyelashes.  Coating the lashes with mascara and removing the mascara w...

#117: How to Express your Meibomian Glands

Jul 20, 2021

My patients and some of my students in my Alleviate Dry Eye course often ask me about how to express their meibomian glands.  You may have been told to do this by your own doctor.  Or, maybe you have read about it or heard about it from a friend.  A lot of folks are still confused as to how to do it.

If you've been following my blog for a while, then you know I talk about doing four simple steps to take care of our dry eyes daily.  To review, the first step is hydrate, so using an artificial tear. The second step is to cleanse your lids and lashes. The third step is to heat your lashes, and right after that heating you often want to express those meibomian glands, so we're going to talk about that. The fourth step is to take a dry eye supplement. I always recommend HydroEye to my patien...

#116: The Best Mascara for Dry Eyes

Jul 13, 2021

Mascara is an important topic to American women.  Did you know there is a study that shows that American women apply mascara to their eyelashes an average of 9 times per week?  I think it is probably in every woman's makeup bag.  And, it is so important to take it's ingredients into mind when we are talking about the long term health of our eyes.

Those of us who have dry eyes are already dealing with red and irritation.  Many of my patients tell me that they just can't tolerate eye makeup anymore.  They have suffered too many years of wearing makeup that is full of toxic ingredients.

Let's talk about three reasons why you should switch to my favorite mascara, Eyes Are The Story.  It's the mascara that I use every day, and I think that it is the best mascara out there for people who are ...

#114: Summer Tips to Leave your Dry Eye Drama Behind

Jun 29, 2021

If you suffer from dry eyes, summer can be a tough time of the year because you want to be outdoors.  You want to be enjoying all the things you love about summer, but your eyes are red, irritated, and watering.  Don't let your eyes hold you back this summer.  I've got a couple of great tips for you to ditch that dry eye drama.

1) Protect your Peepers

Protect your eyes.  No matter what time of year it is, always wear sunglasses when you spend time outdoors.   Sunglasses protect the eyes from UV light.  My patients with dry eyes are usually really sensitive to the light as well.  So, it is best to wear sunglasses anytime you are outdoors to decrease the irritation.  For more details about the best sunglasses for dry eyes, check out this blog.

Along with protecting your eyes with sungl...
