#102: Demodex Blepharitis and a New Study on Tea Tree Oil

Mar 23, 2021

Demodex mites.  This is a tricky topic to bring up with my patients.  The truth of the matter is that with age, we all have some Demodex mites living on our eyelashes.  For some reason (science still isn't sure why) these mites are normal to have on our lashes.

Yet, this topic always gives my patients the heebie-geebies.  I want to reassure you all that having them on your lids doesn't mean you are an unclean person.

And, going overboard trying to rid them from your eyes can cause more problems than just the irritation of having them.  So, slow down.  Don't freak out.  Let's discuss these Demodex mites....

What are Demodex Mites?

Demodex is a small mite that buries itself into the follicles of the eyelashes and eyebrows.  This mite is in the same family as the mite that causes man...

One of the most common complaints I get from my patients that I either see in the office or online in a telehealth visit is, "Why are my eyes so tired?"  And then, the patient usually elaborates with something like this, "I don't know what they're doing, they're just tired. I wake up, and they're tired. I drink my coffee, and they're tired. Why am I so tired all the time?"  Today, I will review three reasons why your eyes are tired.

What does Clean Makeup Mean?

Feb 09, 2021

Most of my patients ask me lots of questions about how to make their eyes look younger.  How can we turn back the clocks and make ourselves look years younger?  Well, if I knew how to do that, I would be lounging on a private island by now.  I don't have a magic wand to wave to erase the effects all those years have had on our bodies.

But, I do know that using Clean Makeup will help decrease the signs of aging around your eyes.  Now I've caught your attention.  It's true, using the average makeup found at the drug store or at the department store counter is filled with toxic ingredients that will increase inflammation of your tissues and increase the signs of aging.

Do Your Eyes Feel More Dry in the Mornings?

Feb 02, 2021

It is said that dry eye has as many symptoms as it has causes.  One person's dry eyes may feel completely different than the next person's dry eyes.  Some patients complain that they are dry and scratchy and the next complains that they are irritated and watery.

Some of my patients feel their dry eyes feel worst and night and some feel worse in the mornings.  When you have eye irritation first thing in the morning, there are usually a few key reasons.

One of the first questions I like to ask my dry eye patients is, "Do your eyes feel more tired and irritated first thing in the morning or at the end of the day?"  The reason that I like to ask this question is that I want to get to the root cause of the dry eye symptoms.

Knowing when the eyes are most dry tells me a lot about the lids.  ...

Get Your Eyes Ready for Winter Weather

Dec 08, 2020

The winter season tends to be the driest time of year in many places around the world.  When the temperatures drop and everyone turns on their heaters, there's not a lot of moisture in the air.  And, that's just the indoor environment.  Outdoors the weather can be harsh with freezing temperatures, blowing wind, and extra UV light coming off of ice and snow.

This is a really tough environment for anyone who suffers from dry eyes.  I want to go over three tips that you can use this winter to keep your eyes feeling moisturized and comfortable. And, I think you'll be a little bit surprised with the third tip.

Tip #1) Use A Gel Artificial Tear Or Ointment At Bedtime

It's nice to have that extra moisturizing gel in your eyes while you're sleeping in the winter.  When the air is so dry i...
