#133: 8 Weeks to Alleviate Dry Eyes

Nov 16, 2021

This week marks a monumental time in my life. You see, about 3 1/2 years ago I set out on a journey to create a simple to follow plan to alleviate dry eye in patience. My goal was to simplify all the information  and consolidate it into a process to eliminate the dry eye drama from your daily life.

This week marks the three year anniversary of the publishing of that book.  I’d love to give you a free PDF copy of the book.  Click here to get your copy.

Alleviate Dry Eye, the Book

The book was written specifically for you, the patient, in mind. The book is an 8 week journey to take your red, painful eyes to looking, feeling, and seeing great. Through the journey, you'll make lifestyle changes to eliminate the redness and irritation that is constantly controlling your life.

#132: My Favorite Warm Compress Mask

Nov 09, 2021

In an earlier blog, I discussed the importance of using a warm compress mask as part of a daily treatment regimen for dry eyes.  However, some of my patients find it hard to use a mask because of a facial condition they have.  The condition is called Acne Rosacea.  It is quite common in light skinned folks or those with heritage from Northern European countries.

Acne Rosacea causes irregular blood vessels to form on the skin.  If you have rosacea on your cheeks, there is an 80% chance that you also have rosacea on your eyelids.

When these irregular blood vessels are close to the eyes, they bring inflammation to its front surface.  This inflammation fuels to cycle of dry eyes.

My patients that have rosacea, are not fans of using warm compresses because they can cause these blood ves...

#130: What's the Point of a Warm Compress

Oct 20, 2021

Over the last few years, the number and styles of warm compress masks have exploded.  There are masks that you microwave, plug in to a computer, track with an app, use once and throw away, and even a mask you can wear while continuing to watch TV or scroll social media.  It's amazing what our imaginations can design.

Using a warm compress mask is part of the 4-simple steps I recommend to all of my patients when starting a dry eye treatment regimen.

I recommend using four simple steps daily to treat your dry eyes.  If you're not sure what I mean by each of these steps, you can refer to this blog for a deeper explanation.  Here's an overview of the steps:

  1. Hydrate: Use an artificial tear to refresh and replenish your tear film.
  2. Harmonize:  Cleanse the bacteria populating you
  3. ...

#121: Habit Stacking

Aug 17, 2021

I want to talk to you about a simple hack to help you stay on track with your dry eye treatment. It's called habit stacking.  If you haven't heard of habit stacking, I'm going to explain it here.  And, I'll even tell you why it's the best way, I think, to incorporate your dry eye treatment into your daily life.

First, let me tell you a little story.  Many years ago, when I was pregnant with my second child, I had something called "Gingivitis of Pregnancy". It was awful. Every time I brushed my teeth, my gums would bleed.  Just the lightest scrub, and I would have a bloody mouth. It was so awful.

I went to dentist to ask what to do.  I was distraught.  My gums were bleeding all the time.  I could just touch them, and they would start bleeding.  My dentist said, I had to start flossing...

#111: How to Travel with Dry Eyes During COVID-19?

Jun 01, 2021

I was able to take my first trip a couple of weeks ago to an in-person education meeting.  I was so excited to travel again and traveling now causes some new problems for those of us who suffer from dry eyes.

Getting ready to go on a trip caused me to think a bit about packing up my dry eye supplies.  It is so important not to skip out on your eye care routine even if you are out of town.  The results of missing a few nights of care can be disastrous.  I've been there.

I previously wrote a blog about traveling with dry eyes.  You can check out that blog here.  It goes over specifically all the things you need to pack in your carry-on versus your checked bag.

What has changed?

Airlines are requiring you to wear a mask for the duration of your flight.  Mask wearing can be particularly...

Teeth vs. Eyes: Which Needs Daily Care?

Nov 17, 2020

What is the one thing we all do before heading out the door in the morning?

No matter where we live, or where we work, we all do one thing before heading out the door. I don’t care how you were brought up, you do this one thing every day.  We all brush our teeth.  It’s ingrained in us.  And, it’s probably even one of the first things you do right after getting out of bed.

We brush our teeth because having bad breath is embarrassing.  But why do we have bad breath in the morning?  You haven’t eaten anything in hours.  Surely you brush your teeth before you went to bed as well.

Why is our breath bad in the morning?

Throughout the day when we are awake, we swallow multiple times a minute. The act of swallowing rinses away the bacteria that lives in our our mouth normally. ...

The Ultimate Guide to Warm Compresses

Nov 10, 2020

Are your eyes feeling dry and gritty today?  Are they scratchy?  Or, do you feel like there's something in them all the time?  These are common symptoms my patients come to see me about.  And, there's something that you can do to help.

Studies say that about 85% of dry eye sufferers have some kind of dysfunction of their oil glands.  If your eyes are scratchy or feel like they've got something in them all the time, then a warm compress will help.  This is a simple step that can help those tired eyes feel more comfortable.

What are Warm Compresses Used For?

A warm compress heats up the oil glands inside your eyelids, and the heat melts the oil that are clogged in there.  The oil can then flow out and onto your eyes.  The oil glands play an important role in keeping your eyes ...
